Julian Weir smashes own Taranaki record in the first night of finals

The first day of the NZ Age Group Short Course Champs had Taranaki swimmers in finals and a Taranaki record broken.

Julian Weir broke his own 50m backstroke record in a time of 27.17 - the sheer determination to gain the gold medal was quietly evident from the 14 year old Stratford Flyers swimmer.  Brydie Whitehead picked up a bronze medal in the 16yr girls 200m backstroke.  Other finalists tonight were Ann-Marie O'Donnell and Nikaela Gilmer who also smashed seconds off their times from this mornings heats.

The meet continues until Thursday.
